Which is Better: Monohull or Catamarans?

Here in the Philippines, it is not common to see a typical Filipino to buy a yacht. Usually, the one who buys such things are Filipino celebrities and Businessmen who have a money to spare to buy such luxurious vessels. According to PEP.PH, some of the Filipinos that have yachts are: Willie Revillame, Manny Pacquiao, Gretchen Baretto, and Chavit Singson. Yes, I became curious of them and their boats, and searched them too. One thing that I’ve noticed of them are majority uses a mono-hulled yacht while one has a Catamaran. But what differentiates a monohull and a catamaran?

Okay let’s compare and dissect a mono-hull from a catamaran, here are some of the criterias that we look for in comparison:

Safety

When it comes to safety, the catamarans will always beat themono-hulls with ease. Catamarans have natural buoyancy which keeps them floating incase emergency happens. Plus, in a Catamaran, crews have that safe zone where they can stay by having a large cockpit. In Mono-hull’s case, it can travel on bad weather with lower resistance but once bad weather destroys the ship, it can sink under the sea.

Speed & Performance

In terms of speed, the Catamaran will always outclass that of mono-hulls because Catamarans have less hull part submerged under water. But when it comes to heavier loads, Mono-hulls will outclass the catamaran because it has a larger hull submerged underwater. It is already thus adding heavier loads won’t matter.

Fuel Efficiency

When it comes to fuel efficiency, catamarans have the clear advantage. Since less hull is exposed to the water, it is lighter thus can consume lesser fuel and also, has lower resistance against the water.

Maintenance

When it comes to maintenance, I think It is costlier to maintain catamarans than that of mono-hulls because it has two of everything but maintenance wise, since it has two powerful engines, it will incur less problems.

Comfort

Comfort wise, catamarans are very stable and is very friendly for those sea sick troubled passengers. Mono-hulls can never beat Catamarans in this category.

Overall Verdict

All in all Catamaran is the clear winner here: safety, speed & performance, fuel efficiency, maintenance and comfort, with a score of 5-0.
